Anthropologists are probably in almost universal agreement that the first stories humanity ever told were Rom-Coms. Around campfires early neanderthals would trade stories of relationships they wanted but the timing was never right or they didn't want to lose the favorite mammoth hunting partner by making it romantic. Even the best selling book of all time, The Bible, is basically a long will they/won't they between God and humanity. Then in the sequel, when they finally do get together, their baby, Jesus, is super obsessed with love that it's practically all he talks about but -- plot twist -- he never finds the right person to settle down with.
