If you travel along I-80 near Snow Shoe, PA you’ll pass a gas station along a dirt road. Follow it two miles to a small lake. Welcome to Lost Virginity State Park. Legend has it that the park gets its name from this story:

In 1951, high schooler Eugene "Bud" Coogan had spent almost three full years trying to get into the pants of his crush Maxine Roulphstadt. In that time he had tried every scheme imaginable, including but not limited too; telling her he was going to space on a secret mission and may never return, dressing up as the school mascot, Wally the Wonder Bear, and insisting that doing it with a stuffed animal didn’t count, and finally, telling her a witch was going to steal his penis and then only place he could hide it was inside of her. None of these ploys worked.

However, one day, toward the end of school, Bud drove Maxine out to the Lost Virginity State Park (at that time known by a horribly racist name that we won’t repeat here) and explained to her he really never learned how to talk to women. Maxine understood, and said that after she left for college he could tell people they did it. He agreed, added some embellishments, and the story became so popular they decided to change the name of the park. Also, it was a much better story and easier then saying the old name and then having to quickly add “But we really don’t feel like that anymore, it was a different time.

The name stuck and Maxine and Bud pretty much never talked again, because Bud’s story was pretty gross and not at all what Maxine had agreed to.
